They have Nick Cave dolls now? I want one!

Three Russian girls made a Nick Cave doll and presented it to him in 1998.
The pictures are from their website, which can be found here. The website looks like it has been abandoned, which is a shame because it used to feature photos of their other dolls too.

I am in the process of tracking down these artists.

Here's a couple of more shots of the doll :

Made by Hasbro in the 1960's.
Sets included Mamas & Papas, The Monkees and a few other artists.

Twin Peaks

The show scared me when I was a child and then fascinated me as I grew older. It featured such a great deal of characters, everyone had a secret or three.

And there should have been action figures.
Gosh, I mean, I'd want one of Laura, Dale, Johnny Horne (with headdress), Audrey Horne, Josie, The Giant, The Man From Another Place, Dr. Jacoby, Deputy Hawk, Major Briggs, Annie, Bobby and Maddy.

Don't get your hopes up too high. The above figure is not real. It was created by NormMac for a Worth1000 Photoshop Celebrity Toys contest.

Gotta keep on hoping. Maybe they could release some 20th Anniversary Twin Peaks action figures in 2010.

James Dean

Mattel has a few Dean dolls

And then there's the Hot Toys figure that costs a fortune but looks pretty fine.

I wish there was a Sal Mineo / Plato doll to go along with the rebel Dean one.

If you want to sing out, sing out !

Actor Bud Cort with Harold and Maude dolls. The photo was taken by Robert Trachtenberg and it accompanied an interview in Vanity Fair back in the day.

Cort is a fantastic man and you should most definitely visit The Unoffical Bud Cort Fan Site, from which I found the photo in the first place.

Superstar !

Before Todd Haynes went on to make films like Velvet Goldmine and I'm Not Here, he made Superstar - the Karen Carpenter Story (1987).
Starring Barbie dolls.

It's good and you can watch it here.

If you have seen Velvet Goldmine, it's interesting to note that the doll who plays the Carpenters manager/record executive looks a whole lot like the character Cecil (Brian Slade's first manager, who is based on David Bowie's early manager Kenneth Pitt) in Velvet Goldmine.

sixties flashback

Yes, you're right.
Not actual dolls, more like photo montages. But they're pretty brilliant.
This was the cover of the TeenSet magazine on March, 1969.

Cobain can you hear the spheres...

I'd been a die-hard Nirvana fan for many years and had to think long and hard about buying this one. First off; The Smells Like Teen Spirit song irritates me. Second of all, the doll's face looks nothing like Cobain's.
But I did buy it in the end and repainted it. It still looks weird so I stashed the doll into a wooden doll house on the uppermost shelf next to my Oscar Wilde and Vincent van Gogh figures.

These figures are made by NECA Toys.

Casey Niccoli

In the 1993 film Gift (that centers around the band Jane's Addiction, and most of all, the singer Perry Farrell and his then companion, the beautiful artist Casey Niccoli) there is a scene where Casey has overdosed and lies against a chair.
Behind her is a cloth doll with colored braids just like her own.
I'm not absolutely sure but I assume this was a portrait doll made to look like her.

5-4-3-2-1-Dire Straits are GO!

The Dire Straits video for Calling Elvis was released in 1991 and it was directed by the legendary Gerry Anderson, father to one of my favorite tv series of all time, Thunderbirds.
The video features Mark Knopfler & Co. as marionettes, with some cameos from the Tracy family.

don't whip it

There appears to be several Devo dolls out there, but they all share a flaw : their hats don't fit. I had fun reading all those Amazon reviews about them.

Go over to 5Years.com to read about Ziggy dolls.

Lotte Pritzel (1887-1952)

Lotte Pritzel was a German artist who made meticulously detailed wax dolls for collectors. Her subjects ranged from public figures to fairytale characters.
I originally heard about Pritzel while reading about the amazing German dancer Anita Berber, who was also a subject of Lotte's art.

Here is an official website dedicated to her work :
Die Puppen der Lotte Pritzel
